Report on progress of Gai Secondary School ~ Nov 2008
In an attempt to provide secondary education to the local community we have been sponsoring the development of a new secondary school in Gai village. The government will only become involved when the local community has shown there is a need for the school and have started the building with their own funds. We started working with the local community two years ago, initially using a classroom from the primary school. The village people identified an area of ground for building, cleared the site and last year started construction of two classrooms, latrines and offices for the staff. To obtain government support it was essential to build the latrines and also to provide science equipment. Thankfully, due to a private donation both these requirements were met.

The school initially had 14 pupils in year one, who have now progressed to year 2, and now a further 15 have joined. Being a new school, everyone is feeling their way, including the staff.
The new headmaster Andrew Ndithya was very keen to see his school develop and requested support to provide desks and chairs for his pupils (£17 per set) in the newly constructed classrooms. There is also need for funds to build and furnish a boarding house for the pupils - £50 per bunk beds. We were also asked to help one of the teachers, Peter with his post graduate training (£700)
The school is providing a very valuable resource for the local community and stops the children having to travel many miles for their secondary education. We were able to help not only with the school's construction but were also able to donate footballs and volleyballs and also provide a team kit which had been kindly donated.
Hopefully continued support from AAF will see the school grow to provide a full 4 years of secondary education and see its first students graduate in 2012.
